[info]mimdancer: Mamluk embroidery

I have been busy charting up the lovely designs on Mamluk "blackwork" and pattern darning. I have put some up on my site and would love some feedback.

You can download the charts from the site. They are single page pdfs.

Thanks!

[info]autistic_hobbit: One More Brick Stitch Cushion

(c)Timothy J. Mitchell

Zafania did this pattern first (tiny purse here before) :-)

I love this blood-coloured linen (it's from Russia).

Here it is (in non-aristocratique entourage).

[info]krazyfiberkat: I sorta haz a finish!!!

So, I decided to make a Norse Apron Dress last summer, because I just needed something NEW and didn't have time to fit a period appropriate gown for my period ... circa 1500 Catalonia...  After wearing the dang thing, I realised that it was a little boring.  So, I embellished it:-) Heavy on the pictures... )

Now, for the caveats and disclaimers... This is not a competition piece by any stretch of the imagination.  I wanted to embellish my dress in my chosen art form and have some fun doing it.   According to my sources, there are no examples of apron dresses that carry embroidery other than on the seam lines.  The band, at the top, was usually a card woven piece, not embroidered, nor is there any extant dresses with runic writing...however, I was told of a Norse Saga that talks of Sorceresses with Runes on their dresses...  The Mammen characters, in their original form...not the way I did them :-D...were from a 10th century textile believed to be a cloak.

The phrases used in the lettering are not meant to be insulting to those with Norse/Saxon personae, merely they are a nod to my actual persona, which is so not Norse/Saxon.  So, those that can't take a joke...

So with that all said, I hope you enjoy, my humble efforts.

[info]autistic_hobbit: German Brick Stitch (Again)

Hi, everyone!
Here's cushion I've just made (linen + brick stitch embroidery).

These two 13th century brick stich paterns were recreated by designer (с)Kathy Stormberg based on a photo of St. Ursula's reliquary box (the original embroidery covered box had a variety of patterns; original is badly faded and colours are indistinguishable ).

I chose these faint shades for the cushion front because of Ursula, the-girl-who-didn't-want to-marry - this is the way I think about her...
Stitches were taken over 2, 4 and 6 threads of the ground fabric with three threads of an ordinary cotton floss. (Truly, it was complicated to stitch and cound, stitch and count.)

[info]kimikosews: Gold & Silk Heraldic Embroidery Project

Hi folks,

While I normally work on Tudor & Elizabethan clothing, I've recently been working on an Elizabethan embroidery project, based on an extant book cover. It will eventually be a box cover. I thought I'd share a couple of recent pics.

First Quarter First Quarter
First quarter done for now, until I figure out what to color the narrow "fingers" in. Goldwork will be later.
Berry Cluster Berry Cluster
Showing 2 strawberries and their flower in silk. Gold laid threads & gold purl to come later.

If you're interested in the project, which includes lots of photos, some step-by-step pics, dressing a slate frame, and whatever gets my fancy; progress posts can found on my own blog here:
http://kimikosews.livejournal.com/tag/heraldic_embroidery

To the mod: I tagged this as goldwork, as it will have some goldwork later. It is also silk embroidery, which is not among the tags.

[info]zafania: stem stitch collar

this is the collar of a 13th cyclas, done freehand in silk on wool. It's stem stitch, which I haven'd used much before, so I was just mucking about really - the pattern is just a fairly generic medieval fleuret based on numerous manuscripts, but it did come out looking a bit like the viborg embroidery. the silk is 30/2 nm stuff that was bought for weaving with(i.e. much cheapness - the whole outfit was made from my fabric stash, not that it's made much of a dent in it mind you), and the brocade fabric you can see behind is the underdress

Photobucket

sometime over the next day or so, if lj ever stops mucking about (I've been trying and failing to post to my own journal all day) I will post the rest of the outfit to dressdiaries, and handsewngarb.

[info]zafania: Rekjahilid antependium

Acouple of weeks ago I finally got round to making a start on the antependium project by doing the all important dyeing

dyed wool

from left the dyes used are - exhaust bath madder, first bath madder, cochineal, a compound overdyed blackish colour from weld+walnut+madder+indigo, walnut, marigold+onion, weld, marigold+onion+indigo, weld+indigo, indigo - however not all of these are for use on the antependium.
