Now, for the caveats and disclaimers... This is not a competition piece by any stretch of the imagination. I wanted to embellish my dress in my chosen art form and have some fun doing it. According to my sources, there are no examples of apron dresses that carry embroidery other than on the seam lines. The band, at the top, was usually a card woven piece, not embroidered, nor is there any extant dresses with runic writing...however, I was told of a Norse Saga that talks of Sorceresses with Runes on their dresses... The Mammen characters, in their original form...not the way I did them :-D...were from a 10th century textile believed to be a cloak. The phrases used in the lettering are not meant to be insulting to those with Norse/Saxon personae, merely they are a nod to my actual persona, which is so not Norse/Saxon. So, those that can't take a joke... So with that all said, I hope you enjoy, my humble efforts. Mon, Jun. 20th, 2011, 01:36 pm
Hi, everyone!
Here's cushion I've just made (linen + brick stitch embroidery). These two 13th century brick stich paterns were recreated by designer (с)Kathy Stormberg based on a photo of St. Ursula's reliquary box (the original embroidery covered box had a variety of patterns; original is badly faded and colours are indistinguishable ). I chose these faint shades for the cushion front because of Ursula, the-girl-who-didn't-want to-marry - this is the way I think about her... Stitches were taken over 2, 4 and 6 threads of the ground fabric with three threads of an ordinary cotton floss. (Truly, it was complicated to stitch and cound, stitch and count.) While I normally work on Tudor & Elizabethan clothing, I've recently been working on an Elizabethan embroidery project, based on an extant book cover. It will eventually be a box cover. I thought I'd share a couple of recent pics. If you're interested in the project, which includes lots of photos, some step-by-step pics, dressing a slate frame, and whatever gets my fancy; progress posts can found on my own blog here: http://kimikosews.livejournal.com/tag/h To the mod: I tagged this as goldwork, as it will have some goldwork later. It is also silk embroidery, Fri, Jun. 3rd, 2011, 06:42 pm
